“Every object, well contemplated, opens up a new organ within us.” – Goethe

Sofía Ortega is a Venezuelan multidisciplinary artist based in Paris. Working across painting, drawing, photography, self-portraiture, installation, video, and experiments with liquids, she explores the relationship between inner experience and the material world. Her practice moves through the psyche, the body, silence, and the natural environment, attending to what emerges beyond conscious intention.

In her process-based paintings, Sofía pours liquid pigment onto raw canvas, organic cotton, and bedsheets. As color spreads and seeps into fabric, gesture meets the behavior of matter. The resulting forms suggest cellular structures, geological formations, and fluid landscapes without settling into fixed images. Through absorption and staining, she seeks a tactile sense of presence, as though the surface held traces of something alive.

Her photographs of liquid experiments extend this attention to fluid behavior. Observing fluids in motion, interact, disperse, and change, she approaches matter as an active participant in the process. Each photograph captures only a snapshot of an ongoing transition.

Her graphite drawings follow a different but related path. Images arise through dreams, active imagination, and intuitive associations, gradually taking shape through tonal accumulation and sustained mark-making. Organic forms, insects, and bodily fragments inhabit misty, indeterminate spaces, hovering between recognition and uncertainty. Drawing becomes a way of giving form to images that first manifest within the body as an elusive memory, sensation, or gut feeling.

Across mediums, Sofía approaches artistic research as a practice akin to gardening: one of careful attention and collaboration with the agency of materials. Whether working with the unruly behavior of liquids or materializing images that emerge without conscious design, she responds to what unfolds, participating without fully controlling. Rooted in receptivity, her practice explores what is difficult to define. For Sofía, making art is a deliberate practice of presence, a way of remaining attentive to sensation, feeling, and the experience of being.
