Sofía Ortega is a Venezuelan artist based in Paris. She studied Graphic Design at L’Institut Supérieur d’Arts Appliqués (LISAA) before completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Paris College of Art. Her multidisciplinary practice encompasses painting, drawing, photography, installation, video, and sound. Working primarily with liquid color field painting and graphite drawing, Sofía explores how images emerge through the interaction of material processes, dreams, active imagination, and perception.
In her paintings, liquid pigment is poured onto raw canvas, organic cotton, and bedsheets, where it spreads, pools, and absorbs into the textile. Forms arise through the interaction of gravity, diffusion, chance, and gesture, allowing the material itself to participate in the development of the image. Guided by restraint, the paintings often remain open and sparse, inhabiting a space between formation and dissolution where ambiguity remains active and perception slows.
Her graphite drawings originate in dreams, active imagination, intuition, and unconscious associations. Through gradual tonal accumulation and sustained mark-making, figures, vessels, insects, bodily fragments, and other recurring forms emerge within indeterminate spaces. Occupying a threshold between recognition and uncertainty, these images carry traces of inner experience into visible form. A willingness to leave images unresolved allows ambiguity to remain active within the work.
Across mediums, Sofía investigates the emergence and instability of images and the porous relationship between inner experience and the material world. Recurring motifs of metamorphosis, embodiment, and permeability appear throughout her practice, as forms emerge, transform, and dissolve through encounters between material processes, perception, and imagination. Drawing from meditation, dreams, and attentive observation, she creates spaces in which subtle states of feeling and awareness become perceptible.
